The way we work is changing, especially after the impact of COVID-19. In Taiwan, 80% of companies have implemented flexible or hybrid work models, but some are struggling to transition without the support of global corporate teams. At our recent Global HR Leader Forum in Taipei, we explored the future of work in Taiwan in collaboration with Novartis. Together with our Taiwanese HR community, we discussed the impact of hybrid and remote working, addressed the challenges of employee engagement, the need to work harder on influencing key stakeholders, and the necessity of building trust between managers and employees.

It is well-known that hybrid and remote work models can improve work-life balance and enhance engagement, but concerns have arisen regarding declining employee engagement levels when working from home full-time. To address this challenge, creative approaches are needed to reignite engagement and foster a sense of connection and purpose.

Prioritising Employee Engagement and Work-Life Integration

One of the HR leaders shared their unique experience, highlighting a different employee demographic and limited office capacity. Despite these challenges, they place engagement as their top priority and a key performance indicator. They employ various strategies, such as the Smart Work Program, employee assistance programs, psychologist talks on topics like doctor forums, and team-building workshops. Emphasising work-life integration, they strive to create a harmonious environment where employees can thrive and feel the commitment from organisations.

Caring for Employee Well-being: Lessons from a Prominent Conglomerate

Another HR leader from a leading conglomerate shed light on their commitment to employee well-being. This company is renowned for valuing integrity, innovation, and trust. As they expand into international markets, they prioritise the well-being of their workforce. They have established wellness centres at each facility, staffed by professional nurses available 24/7 to provide immediate medical assistance and support and conduct annual health examinations to prioritise employee wellness. Additionally, they offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that provides resources and help for personal and work-related challenges. Employees have access to counselling services, professional referrals, and assistance with various life issues. The company organises daily well-being-themed initiatives to promote a healthy lifestyle and work-life balance.

Influencing Business Leaders to Embrace Hybrid Work

Influencing business leaders requires resilience, data-driven approaches, and navigating diverse perspectives to gain buy-in for the hybrid work model. HR leaders must leverage different data and facts to build a compelling case and have a thick skin when facing resistance. By presenting the benefits and demonstrating the positive impact on employee engagement and productivity, organisations can encourage leaders to embrace hybrid work.

In conclusion, as Taiwan looks towards the future of work, the focus on hybrid work, employee well-being, and the role of employers becomes increasingly important. By addressing employee engagement challenges, implementing work-life integration strategies, and prioritising employee well-being, organisations can create a conducive environment for success. The invited senior HR leaders' examples highlight the significance of tailored initiatives, such as employee assistance programs, themed well-being activities, and wellness centres, in supporting employees' holistic well-being. Employers must remain resilient, data-driven, and adaptable to navigate the evolving work landscape effectively and ensure a positive and productive hybrid work environment.
